We just received word of a datacenter maintenance event scheduled this Friday. It will affect most customers, although not those who signed up this week. During the 4-hour window, the service impacting activities are scheduled to occur between 0800-1000GMT.

Details
  • routing config changes on core routers
  • software updates on core routers
  • replacing interface card with a defective port

The expected impact is 3-4 outages of 5 minutes or less. We’ll be monitoring during the window, remember to check status.slicehost.com, slicechat and our twitterstream for updates.

Update

These are the time frames to expect network outages if everything goes as planned:

0800 to 0810 08330 to 0835 0900 to 0910

  1. Title says 0600-1000GMT, body says 0800-1000GMT. Can you confirm which is correct?

    Many thanks!

  2. I believe that the body of this message should say “the service impacting activities are scheduled to occur between 0600-1000GMT.”

  3. The post is correct. This is a 4 hour window, but the network outages are not expected until 0800 GMT.

  4. less than 4 days notice!

  5. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m getting slightly irritated with all of these outages in the recent weeks.

  6. @josh

    go tell Datotel http://www.datotel.com/

  7. @slicer – It is short, but this is an emergency maintenance to fix both hardware and software problems in prep for a switch to the new core.

@josh – agreed and we apologize for that. Hopefully this will all be settled soon.

  8. You guys have had a lot of outages lately.

Perhaps it’s not so bad, ironically, that I’m still waiting for a slice to become available (given the pretty lackadaisical way datotel roll).

Here’s hoping they will be sorted within the ~2 month wait I have for a slice. ;)

  9. Some feedback for Datotel. This is during business hours for us! Saturday evening/Sunday morning would have a better chance of being convenient worldwide

  10. Hi Alan,

It is unfortunate but in the ‘global market’ it is always someone’s business hours.

The majority of clients for us and for Datotel are in the US.

Having said that, we will do our utmost to ensure that any disruption is minimised. I am based in the UK and I understand how difficult different timezones can be to work with.

I think your suggestion of a Sat night may be better for some, but those that rely on the weekend business (entertainment sites for example) would then be at a disadvantage.

When we are dealing with a worldwide audience and userbase it is nearly impossible to take into account all timezones and all activities within it.

As I say, I am in the UK and I understand how difficult it is when dealing with different timezones.

    PickledOnion.

  11. “prep for a switch to the new core.” – will that mean more outages? When is that happening?
