Private IPs for your slices
Today we’re pleased to announce a long overdue feature – private IPs for customers with multiple slices. Those of you load-balancing across slices, employing a database cluster/server or syncing between slices will find this option perfect for inter-slice communication. Most importantly, bandwidth on private interfaces will not be metered and therefore does not count toward your per slice transfer limits. We hope this makes life a bit easier for our larger customers using several slices with lots of chatter. Private IPs can be obtained by opening a support issue and there is no charge. We’re looking forward to everyone’s feedback!

This rocks on so many levels.

This is really awesome! 30 minutes after reading this post, a few emails, and its all working!
Looks like the ping ttl is one hop less now too, which is always a good thing.
Thanks again guys for a really excellent service!

This was a major roadblock for deploying enterprise level services on Slicehost and I’m very excited about it being added.
Just out of curiosity, is this limited to a single physical location or can we setup private networks between datacenters?

Quick question: is this a private network for each customer (ie. traffic is completely segmented from other customers), or is this a generally-available Slicehost-internal network?
Basically, does this allow for the possibility of two companies communicating directly slice-to-slice (I can imagine a few people wanting to take advantage of that), or does it really give you a private/secure channel for data (something I’m personally more interested in ;-))?

Wow. This is amazing. Like other posters have said, this will come in handy especially when we add another slice.
Great job as usual.

@Silas – per datacenter (nothing between them)
@Edward – general private network (not per customer)

Nice, I remember asking about this in the IRC channel.

Wow. That is seriously awesome. Thanks Slice!

So can the bandwidth for a ‘private’ slice be transferred to another slice? ex. I have 2 slices, a 512 app slice and a 1gb db slice. The db slice is setup with a private ip so that only the app server can chat with it. Can the 400gb of unused bandwidth on the db slice be applied to the app slice?

Talk about being late to the party. I just happened to stroll here and find this. Thank you so much! :D

Once again, we’re so happy to continue our service with Slicehost!

This is excellent – always wondered about the bandwidth usage of interconnected servers. This will be a huge money savor for us! Thank you very much – you guys really ROCK!

awesome!!!

Reflecting on Eddie’s comments, I also wish that Slicehost traffic could be spread between slices. It would be great if traffic on a slice for a database server could be used on the web front-end instead.
For example, if I’m paying for two 1GB slices, it would be nice if the 400GB of traffic for each slice would just be combined as a total of 800GB in my account, and as long as I don’t go over 800GB for the account, then I won’t be charged extra.

David, we can make arrangements for that on a case-by-case basis. Contact support either through the SliceManager or at support@slicehost.com.

I just had private IPs set up for my two slices: slice1 (a 256 slice) and slice2 (a 512 slice).
Out of curiosity, I checked the bandwidth using iperf. When slice1 is the iperf client and slice2 is the iperf server, the bandwidth is about 60-70 Mbit/sec. When the roles are reversed the bandwidth is only 15-20 Mbit/sec.
Could this be due to the different slice plans (256 vs 512) or is something else going on here?
Thanks, Bob.
