Everything's bigger in Texas...
Hook’em Horns! Gig’em Aggies! How ‘bout them Cowboys! Texas forever!
I’ve run out Texas propaganda, but am delighted to announce that slices are live in the Rackspace Dallas datacenter. We’ve been working hard on this since the announcement last October and it’s a big step for us. First, a huge thank you to all of the Rackers who helped turn up the new facility, they’ve been awesome and completely top-notch. Second, we are pumped to offer customers geographically diverse options for backup/redundancy/load-balancing purposes. Third, we have plenty of room to grow in the new facility and are working harder than ever on geeky goodies you are sure to love.
Now what does this mean? Q&A below.
Q. Where are your datacenters?
A. We have 2 facilities in St. Louis (STL-A and STL-B) and now DFW-1.
Q. Where are new customers going?
A. New customer are going to DFW-1, previously they went to STL-B.
Q. Where do slices go when I add them?
A. Additional slices are automatically added to your local/default datacenter.
Q. Can I pick where a new slice is built?
A. Not at the moment. If you’d like to add slices in a datacenter other than your default, just contact support and we’ll do it for you. DFW-1 is a great option for those of you in STL that require geographic diversity for disaster recovery and business continuity.
Q. Can I move existing slices to DFW-1?
A. Not automatically. You’ll need to contact us to build a new slice in DFW-1, then rsync data from the old slice.
Q. Can I create a new slice in DFW-1 from a backup in STL?
A. Not at the moment, but we are working on solutions.
That’s all for now, if you have any other questions please let us know. As always thank you for your support!

Does this mean I can get my new slices extra spicy with a side of chips and salsa? Seriously, though, now I’m ready for slices in Europe and Asia. Any estimates on that?

Thanks for your excellent service.
Seeing that everything is bigger in Texas I am looking forward to those 32Gb and 64Gb and bigger slices :) (Not sure if that is viable or an the cards, but it would be real nice, though.)
However, 15.5Gb is already much appreciated!

Now if only there was a datacenter in DC, Atlanta, or New York Slicehost would be the best all around.

@Jacob … What about some west coast love! E.g., Los Angeles… Los Angeles… and Los Angeles… (Actually San Diego, San Jose, would be really nice).
Anyway, the expansion is welcomed news!

Whoop!
Yay for expansion.

What’s the hardware for new customers?

Do you guys publicize which datacenters you actually use? The short names are handy for customers, but I’m just curious (as a Dallas-ite) where you’re locating DFW-1?

@Brett
I believe Rackspace (Slicehost) host their servers at The Planet in downtown Dallas.

Rackspace has their own building/facility in Dallas.

I wonder, now that you have two data centers have you thought about having the backup tool backup to the “other” data center (so the backup image would be stored at the data center that the slice is not in).

Great! Want that redundancy! Give me two platefuls, please. (Or two platesful, if you prefer.)

@Huy West coast would be nice also, but I need east coast bad.

Does the new Dallas facility use Cogent for bandwidth?
February 4th, 2009 at 04:04 PM MossoChad
@Rob The DFW data center does not use Cogent. We operate 7+ different Tier 1 network providers out of this DC alone.

Great news. Any resulting job openings in the DFW area?

Congratulations on your first Rackspace data centre. Now please, please make the next one in London, and knock it out in half the time you did the Dallas one – go on you know you can do it. Pretty please!

I second having the next in Rackspace London, that would be most excellent, it would certainly put a smile on the faces of all the european customers not just the brits.

Cool. I’m a new customer and my slice is in DFW-1, wich is near where I live (México-Texas border), not that this mean anything but… nice.

One more vote for London here too, come on SL! We love you =)
