HostingFu Review of Slicehost

It has been more than 4 months since I wrote this review! And shall I say that SliceHost has not disappointed me? Service has been rock solid, and SliceHost has the best communication I ever had, from experience of 4 different VPS providers. I think the business is really taking off for Matt and Jason as well. Great work!

Chris B.

My initial impressions of slicehost are all positive at this point. Your web presence is attractive and you do make it very easy for a technical person to chose slicehost and initially provision a server. I believe the extreme ease and effectiveness of your process may even be in the category of disruptive technology.

tinyapps.org

best hosting on the planet

Slicehost offers simplicity, power, and a crazy clean UI. I haven’t enjoyed tech this much since BeOS.

Michael

simple, efficient, performance-based, and convenient. perfect. you guys are saints to put up with my questioning. it would be great if every host could do that, but that is not to be. it really makes a difference to see that there is such a direct relationship between provider and customer, and clearly helps strengthen the realtionship, as well of the image of being a provider by developers for developers.

Francesc

The only thing I can say is Wow! Im fan one of Slicehost! Rails up and running in 30 minutes.

Tristan

So far I’ve been incredibly happy with the product and the people behind it. Wonderful company and a perfect example of how to do it right.

Jake

I have been on slicehost for about 4 months and they are one of the best hosts I have had in my 10 years in the business. If they would just open a second data center!

Jack D.

Holy crap am I excited to join SliceHost. I’m a Rails developer and a Linux enthusiast who can’t believe he found a Gentoo VPS with 256MB RAM for $20/month.

You guys are my ALL TIME HEROES.

Jeff W.

So far, Slicehost is nothing short of amazing…

Forrest

Just wanted to thank you guys for your excellent product and service

Teascript

Teascript goes live

For those interested in how Teascript was deployed, the application runs on Apache 2.2 with mod_proxy_balancer and a cluster of Mongrels. I’m using a VPS provided by Slicehost. This setup has been rock solid so far.

Trent

I just wanted to drop by and say thanks. I have never done business with a host who gets it more “right” than you guys. For someone like me who should really have a low-grade colo, but wants the zero-hassle solution, you guys are perfect. Everything I see you doing – I just shake my head because you’re doing it exactly the way I would.

Ajaxterm, btw, is absolutely awesome.

Great work, and thanks.

Filip S.

I really just wanted to tell you that you guys are awesome. It feels weird when it’s a lot easier to get things working starting at root login than under preconfigured click-to-setup shared hosting. (Not that I really expected that kind of thing to work well, but you know what I mean..)

But it’s the good weird.

Love it!

Moon

I really like what you guys are doing… after many years of searching I think I have finally found the sweet spot of price, performance, and flexibility. Great job :-)

Why Slicehost Kicks Ass

Luckily Slicehost rocks so damn hard that I don’t need to worry about that now. I’m serving all my sites on an 8-core AMD64 Gentoo system for less than half my monthly cell phone bill. So if you notice anything feeling snappier around here you can chalk that up to those barons of St. Louis running the Slicehost datacenter.

Ryan A.

Hey guys!

My client got listed on a big arse blog yesterday (he was hosted on name removed), and with the load he got from the high profile links name removed cleverly killed off the processes for ‘excessive memory usage’ on his ‘one click no fuss wordpress account with a gazillion gigabytes of bandwidth!!!’…

So anyway, 24 hours later we’re running his wordpress on one of your 1gb slices. Setup was a breeze, we’re running lighttpd/php4/fcgi/mysql5 from ubuntu’s apt-get thingo.

I have my own 256 slice for my subversion and etc, and the first thing I noticed on his 1gb slice was how much snappier it was! I kept asking him ‘so, how is the speed, faster than name removed?’ the response ‘waaay faster!’.

Anyway, I’m writing just to say how stoked we both are :) He tried to sign up and he had to wait about a day as you were sold out. As much as he was like ‘aw, sucks’, it was great cuz straight off the bat he was witness to your promise of not overselling :D

Thanks for being so awesome! We’ll be hosting more production apps with you in the future!

SliceHost = E3 – Excellent Performance, Excellent Support and Excellent Price…

George A.

Hi,

Just a quick note to let you know how much I like your service. I’ve repaved my slice countless times and learned a lot each time I rebuilt it. Good work. I’m happy to pay the $20/month.

Larry M.

To Matt & the Slicehost crew,

I’ve been on slicehost for about a month now, and I just wanted to let you guys know how great my experience has been. I’m a freelance Rails developer, and my experience on an Ubuntu VPS has been fantastic compared to my previous shared hosting experience.

It’s gotten to the point now where I don’t worry about whether my Rails apps are running (something I did often on shared hosting).

I’m extremely happy with my service and think the $20/256mb slice is an incredible value.

...

Keep up all the good work!

Jim L.

I’ve been at Slicehost a week now, and it’s been great decision. I ordered a small slice to get started as a dev/staging server, and it went so nice I ordered another larger slice the next day to use as a production server. I’m getting ready to launch my new web app next week, and I may actually be able to open it sooner then I’d thought because setting up here has gone so smoothly.

I didn’t think I’d need to use the rebuild option for my slices, but I’ve gone through and wiped them a few times to make sure that I have all of my deployment completely automated. If I ever need a second production server, I’ll be able to set it up with confidence in minutes not days.

Thanks for a great service!

Cliff

I moved my first rails app - kingofthelist.com - to Slicehost about a month ago and couldn’t be happier. I’d never set up a hosting environment from scratch before and was able to get up and running within a day of signing up just using the wiki and some other sources (mongrel/nginx setup). And it actually stayed up, unlike my previous full-service host. :) Massive kudos to the Slicehost guys, this service rocks.

Dan F.

This frickin’ rules. HARD. I’ve wanted something like this for a long time, and here you go making it cheaper than expected and with fancy fresh management maneuvers.

Keep on doing what you’re doing, dudes!

Zach H.

My host of choice – Slicehost

I think I decided that the developer-oriented aspect is what I really like. It’s built by developers who know what hosting should be like. Likewise, the tools they offer are pretty slick.

Gary from tourb.us

Slicehost rocks!

As you can tell we’re very pleased with Slicehost so far. I just hope they figure out a way to keep up with demand, because as good as they are not everyone can afford to wait 52 days to switch!

Collis T.

We came to SliceHost after our previous host fell over when one of our blogs hit a major social media site.

While on Slicehost we’ve set up a blog on our slice called FreelanceSwitch.com. In the last two weeks it has exploded off the blocks hitting 3000 subscribers in no time, it has gone to the top of del.icio.us/popular a few times and been dugg, lifehacked and you name it.

All this means that we have had a LOT of traffic surges, a few days of 20,000+ visitors rocking up to the site, and Slicehost has performed exquisitely. Never has there been any problems, the site has been super fast the whole time and it has afforded a lot of peace of mind.

What makes a good webhost?

My current host, who are absolutely brilliant, no down time and everything simply works, are Slicehost.

Slicehost – VPS done right

But what really threw me off the chair today, was how the actual sign up for a slice is processed: one single form to enter the usual information (name, billing address, credit card number), select the distribution you like to have installed on your slice (I chose Debian Etch) and specify a name/tag for the slice (going to be the slice’s hostname) and one submit button. Upon submitting the form your credit card gets charged and your slice is immediately setup. The whole process takes about 90 seconds and you have an email in your mailbox with the IP address and root password for your slice. I thought that was very impressive as my experiences so far have been quite different, usually involving multiple working days (yes, working days, so no Saturday or Sunday) to get any type of dedicated server, VPS or not.

In conclusion, I am very happy with the services Slicehost is offering and they do keep their promises.

Barry A.

I just wanted to say that i’ve never been happier than i am since i switched to slicehost. I haven’t noticed any downtime, my site is incredibly fast, and for a designer who only acts a developer setting up the server was pretty easy. Thanks!

Ron from rvlt.com

I just wanted to let you know that my slice has been order of magnitudes more stable than XXXX. So much for “true grid technology” :)

I truly hope you guys will be keep the high level of quality service and stability that you have provided so far, even as slicehost grows to eventually conquer the world.

I’m sure you’re already aware of these things, I just wanted to emphasize it and tell you that you’re doing a great job!

Daniel H.

Having been looking for a VPS provider for a while I came across Slicehost. Their website mentioned some keywords (“production” and “escalation”) not normally found elsewhere. After talking to their friendly team on their chat room I realised that they not only used these words, they understood their meaning. I promptly then purchased my first “Slice” and am very impressed so far. If you’re serious about VPS solutions, you be in very welcoming and capable hands at Slicehost.

10 Reasons Why I Love Slicehost.com

I needed a place to host my blog and my development efforts in Ruby on Rails. After trying and looking at alternatives that ‘supported’ Ruby on Rails I decided to give Slicehost.com a shot. I love them and here are my thoughts.

Grant B.

Ahoy, just a quick email to say I’m really happy with my vps account. Pricing, specs, and support info are all ace, and the web interface for managing accounts/servers is nicely done.

Dale B.

I just want you guys to know how happy I am with my Slice. I haven’t had a single issue that wasn’t resolved within minutes by chatting with one of you guys or another Slicehost user. The fact that I can go to a chat room to talk to a sys admin is awesome!

I also enjoyed adding a question to your recent wiki post about the DNS server upgrade and then getting a response an hour later. You guys are innovating on the technology side and the customer service side of your business.

You are truly building something unique in the hosting world. I’ve used 4 other hosts in the past few years and none of them come close to matching you guys in terms of customer experience.

On being Techcrunched and Scobleized on the same day:

...our slice had absolutely no problems despite the fact that I haven’t really had a chance to do any perf tuning on it.

Nadim K.

Been with you guys for one month.

I wish I could send you the amount of love I have for you in sushi. You’d get an entire ocean of japanese goodness. Keep up the kickass service.

Eric N.

I’ve been testing Amazon’s EC2 out for a few weeks but they unfortunately currently don’t provide any local persistence or automated image backups. With your pricing and the ability to fire off new instances I find slicehost much more advantageous.

Russ S.

Absolutely love the service guys. It’s exactly the way hosting should be.

Alessandro B.

We are two of your happy customers :) We have a 256 slice that hosts two java-based web applications. This morning Bitlet hit the front page of digg and many other sites/blogs. Even if Bitlet may not be a CPU killer, the number of pages served was impressively high, and we got a good number of visitors on Novlet too. Needless to say, our slice responded greatly (despite having just 256Mb of RAM) and the system ran smoothly as usual.

Brandon Z.

I just wanted to say that I LOVE Slicehost! I’ve managed Linux boxes for years and Slicehost provides exactly what I’ve been looking for. Keep up the great work and I’ll keep referring business your way :)

Hi Slicehost and thanks for the excellent service. No I’m not leaving I just wanted to say how happy I am for the service you and your team has offered. My site just turned 5 years old today and mentioned you in the blog. Well done you lot, put your feet up and party. Sincerely and real thanks for creating such an excellent project.

Edward P.

Just a quick note to say, wow! I am amazed at how smoothly things are going. I am very happy to have found a hosting company that is offering something resembling a slick product rather than just a ‘service’. My only problem is the servers are so fast I think they are local and that I don’t get enough sleep now because I am playing too much. Good problems compared to the lack of sleep and cursing that I am accustomed to. Thanks for Slicehost!

Why I think Slicehost is the best

I’ve been with Slicehost for a bit more than half a year, and must say I’m really impressed with the service.

RB

Hey,

No problems. No issues. I was just tinkering with my site today and for some reason thought I’d come check out slicehost.com to see what’s been going on.

Then, it occurred to me. I’d almost forgotten the name of my hosting provider seeing as I’m never at their site.

My slice has been up for 207 days. You know, if you want me to visit slicehost.com more often you’ll need to do something about irrational outages or unplanned downtime or something like that. So far, I never have a reason to come here. Thank-you, so much.

-A very happy customer

Slicehost Rocks!

I got excited to make a quick post about SliceHost today when they announced the completion of an update to their account managing software. I think it’s pretty freakin’ great, not only that they are making updates and trying to keep their fingers on the rapidly-changing pulse of the industry, but they also care about improving the user interface, and in turn, all facets of their customer’s experience. Way too many hosting companies care way too little about a customer’s experience while attempting to manage their account. It typically appears that the company is more worried about how they can fit in another ad. Not SliceHost.

Jamie

Review: Slicehost VPS

I’ve only been a Slicehost customer for a few weeks now, but I’m very satisfied with the service and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a VPS solution. Even if you don’t think a VPS is for you, or are uncomfortable at the command line, you might want to check out Slicehost anyways. Their cheapest plan is $20 a month, and that is a pretty low price to pay to get quality experience setting up and configuring your own server. Chances are you’ll end up enjoying it so much that you’ll move all your projects over to Slicehost from that slow and unreliable shared host you’re currently with :)

Roundup of the best low-cost hosting options

If your budget can afford $20/month in hosting fees, look no further than Slicehost’s VPS service. On Slicehost, your site will perform like a large commercial site hosted on state-of-the-art dedicated servers. With Slicehost, you can get the kind of service that used to cost hundreds and thousands of dollars a month.

Brian

Wow!

I am a current [removed] customer who is spending way too much for way too much server with way too much weirdo Solaris cruft to learn. I signed up for a small Slice at 7:58AM this morning. It’s now 9:10AM and I have completely brought up my instance and ported over my Rails app that I was formerly hosting at [removed] (even upgraded to Rails 2.0 in the process). Only thing left to do is pull over the data from my database. Pretty amazing!!! I am loving Slice so far and hopefully good things will continue. This is going to save me $1000/yr. Thanks!

Slicehost is rad and I don’t even use them

Every cool kid at the web designer lunch table is rockin’ a creamy portion of Slicehost goodness. Slicehost is so successful that not too long ago, I remember they had to cease fulfilling new server requests right away because they couldn’t keep up with the demand. In a world full of ‘Wordpress Cannot Connect To Database’ shared hosting hell, Slicehost is quite the breath of fresh air. I’ll definitely be giving them a shot with some sort of project, sometime soon. That $20 a month slice is lookin’ mighty tasty.

Miles

Paul – Tell whoever your boss is that you (and Slicehost in general) are awesome. Hell, just forward this email to him. I tell everyone you guys are awesome, anyway, but you really drove the point home for me today. I know this is probably routine for you, but, man, it’s really nice to get prompt, personal responses. You are awesome. Thank you very much.

Matt C.

I’ve read many testimonials about Slicehost compared to conventional shared hosting. So let me share my take on Slicehost versus conventional dedicated servers. I’ve been a remote sysadmin of dedicated servers for about six years, so I think I’m in a good position to comment on this subject.

The supposed great advantage of dedicated hosting is that you have complete control over the box. But without console access, you’re really beholden to the hosting provider in some ways. For instance, the hosting company usually only offers a small selection of Linux distributions. I once had to set up a box where CentOS and RHEL were the only options. I pulled off a remote install of Gentoo, but it took one or two reboots into the remote rescue environment, which required a support ticket because the remote rescue feature didn’t work automatically as advertised. Also, some hosting providers add their own user account or even their own sshd running on a non-standard port. This sends the message, intended or not, that the provider owns the server.

I just purchased a slite (256 MB) for personal use. I may not have a whole box to myself, but I do have complete freedom over my own slice, and that’s all I want. It’s very gratifying to see all of the things I can do with my slice through the slice manager, especially these: Console, Rename, Reboot, Resize, Rescue, Rebuild, Delete. Wow!

Keep up the great work!

Things That Work

Slicehost Works

So I can’t recommend Slicehost enough. I’m saving money, getting to host whatever sites I want, AND learning all at the same time. Win-win.

All in all, I’m looking forward to using Slicehost for years to come, and to recommend their service to those who look for VPS hosting.

Slicehost Progress Report

A short update on my Slicehost vps which I have had for two months now. I love it. It’s fast, reliable and I have no criticisms of it whatsoever. I’ve cancelled my XXX vps and I will cancel XXX once the contract runs out. All my eggs in one basket (ok, two if you count the rsync.net backups).

David M.

I just wanted to say your product for your price is AMAZING! I’ve been looking for a good VMS for a long time and you guys definitely fit the bill. I am still in awe after logging into my lowly 256slice, yet it’s leaps and bounds faster and has total control vs my old “webhost”. I’ve already recommended you to an insider list of over 1000 consultants for the company I’m employed with. You guys are amazing!!! THANKS!!!

Jason

Finally a company that gives power to people who know what they are doing! An absolute stunning service which I will be recommending to all of my techie friends! Keep up the good work and level of service!

I’m impressed by Slicehost

Very nicely done Slicehost. I’m a believer. Great stability and great management tools. I love it when stuff mostly just works and when it doesn’t I can solve my own problems.

Kelly S.

I just signed up for Slicehost after a recommendation from a friend. My previous host had pretty good customer service, but none like you guys. Following up on the blog on our slice exceeded all expectations. It’s great to know you guys are there for us.

AllYourPals.com

A Plug for Slicehost

Slicehost is the hosting company we are using on AllYourPals.com. And they have been very impressive so far. Super diligent and conscientious, very good at communicating status and planned maintenance. It’s by far the best hosting company I’ve used over the years. Many others in the industry agree.

Tibbsa

A very happy slicer!

This is a largely pointless post, and yet, I feel I have to make it. I joined the Slicehost world about 4-5 months ago, and am nearing the end of my prepaid subscription. I just want to say, for anyone considering signing up, that I consider this to be the best hosting experience I have ever had. I have had 0 performance or connectivity problems, 0 downtime, and not a hiccup to complain about. Uptime is at 126 days and counting since I finished all of the initial setup/testing, and I have YET to ever run into the disk performance problems that I was constantly experiencing elsewhere. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

Slicehost Review

This is some what strange for me but I feel the need to let every one know of my experience with Slicehost for VPS hosting. Over the past five months I’ve been hosting Linhost.info on slicehost, I got in back when there was a waiting line to use the Creme de la crème in hosting. I can’t say anything about their costumer service because I never had the need to contact them about any problem and thats a good thing in my opinion. Uptime has been impressive to say the least and is evident that they allocate the resources for every client. Also I will let you know that I used over 140GB of bandwidth in the past month and a half, I was expecting an email saying “Quit it this isn’t P2P”. Any way so far nothing bad has happened, if you are looking for a reliable, honest and affordable VPS company then look no further Slicehost is the company for you .

James R.

No problem to report (didn’t know where to send a thankyou). Just a sincere thanks to you for this system. I’m flabbergasted at the fantastic VPS system you have in place and the price….. wow. I’m looking at a Debian etch Box and i’m stoked!!!

Daniel

Praise the lord for Slicehost! Well..ehmm…no, not really. But seriously, guys, you rock! Having tried out somewhere to host my railsy-stuff – becoming fed up with XXX and their so-called rails hosting. Tried a few others as well, neither of them working. Had no experience with sysadmin-stuff, setting up servers or really any linux-thingees above general user level (apart from Terminal on Leopard) – now everything is running smothly – 19 hours later. Don’t ever go out of business!

Brandon W.

Dear Slicehost, Thank you so much for the slice. I already transitioned my blog from shared hosting and couldn’t be happier. I really appreciate all the documentation and online information available.

David K.

I just wanted to say thanks for an unparalleled service. It’s really appreciated and I am mightily impressed by the performance of these Xen images, the hardware stability and network uptime. A very happy customer.

Bennie M.

Good is hard to come by…

Slicehost is by far the best hosting company that I have been on. I love them and will probably never move to another hosting company.

Gary T.

You guys rock! Yes, I’m sending fan mail. I always laugh at my wife when she sends fan mail and look who I’m sending it to! I’m a geek. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you fine folks for having such a great service. I’ve told a lot of friends about you although most of them wouldn’t know where to begin with setting up their own anything so your service isn’t ideal for them. But I love it and part of the reason why is because I have so much control over everything. ... Anyway, that’s it from me. Time to get back to work. Just wanted to toss you a note and tell you that you rock and you’re doing a great job!!!!

Jon

Hello Slicehost

I don’t buy a service just because it’s cheap. I like to know the company behind the website and get a feeling that they are invested in the business and are passionate about what they do. Besides the cost savings, I chose slicehost for these reasons…

Hosting Review: Slicehost

Slicehost provides the best of both worlds; I get the reliability of having a company managing my server so that I don’t need to worry about drive failures or server meltdowns or anything, but I also get the freedom of having a dedicated system – only virtualized.

Frank L.

I just wanted to drop a line to tell you how happy I have been with Slicehost. I just signed up for a 1gb slice yesterday and have already started to move my 5,000+ unique a day tech blog (http://tech.nocr.at) over to it, and as soon as you roll out private ip’s I’ll pick up a few more slices for load balancing. I’m going to tell me readers about the wonderful service and the helpfulness of the people in the chatroom yesterday.
